Plug & Perf

The Plug & Perf methodology utilizes a Frac plug, which is landed below the planned perfs and is typically meant to be removed after the wells perfs are completed. The material utilized can be; steel/cast, aluminum, composite, or dissolvable. Silver Fox has a variety depending on customer preference as well as well parameters. Typically to be considered a Frac plug the ID of the Plug is purposefully left open and engineered to be as large as possible to accommodate flow back once the well is active. However Frac Bridge Plugs are also common in Plug and Perf operations, wherein the ID of the Plug is plugged off preventing flow from occurring until Plug is removed.

When it comes to multistage hydraulic fracturing, the implementation and use of plugs is still the preferred method to operators today, as it provides a reliable, flexible and paved the way for economically cost effective hydraulic fracturing. As such, plug-and-perf completions using plugs have remained the method of choice among unconventional operators, and they account for the majority of new well completions in North America today. Traditional plug-and-perf completions offer stage placement flexibility and enable the treatment of stages as far as wireline and coiled tubing (CT) can reach. Plugs can be classified into groups based on their function:

  • Ball drop (Dissolvable/Phenolic Ball from surface)
  • Bridge plug (No flow until removed)
  • Caged Ball (Ball fixtured to plug, allows limited fluid)

Frequently Asked Questions

Plug-and-perf includes pumping down a bridge plug on wireline with perforating guns to a given horizontal location near the toe of the well. The bridge plug is set and then the perforating guns are pulled up and then fired above the previously set bridge plug.  The newly perforated zone can now be stimulated, the next plug and perforating guns can then be deployed and the process is repeated moving back to the heel of the well.
